MISIS and China Media Group Jointly Hold Seminar on ArtificialIntelligence and Global South Development
The Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (MISIS), in collaboration with China Media Group (CMG), held a seminar entitled “World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) and Development Opportunities for the Global South” at the MISIS Office on 30 July 2026. The seminar provided a platform for exchanging views on global AI governance, technological cooperation and development opportunities for Global South countries.
The seminar opened with a keynote address by U Thant Kyaw, Chairman of MISIS, who highlighted the growing importance of artificial intelligence in promoting sustainable development and international cooperation. He emphasized the need for inclusive AI governance and greater collaboration to ensure that developing countries can benefit from technological advancements.
The discussion was moderated by MISIS Executive Member Ambassador U Htin Lynn. Three experts from MISIS and three representatives from China Media Group participated in three discussion sessions covering: (i) the role of WAICO in global AI governance, (ii) AI technology sharing and capacity building for Global South countries, and (iii) opportunities and challenges for Myanmar in advancing safe, responsible and sustainable AI development.
The seminar concluded with an active exchange of views and reaffirmed the importance of strengthening cooperation in AI governance, research, technology transfer and human resource development. Representatives from Myanmar and Chinese media organizations also attended the seminar and covered the discussions.
In his closing remarks, the Chairman of MISIS expressed appreciation to China Media Group, the moderator, speakers and participants for their valuable contributions. He noted that the seminar further strengthened cooperation between MISIS and CMG while promoting mutual understanding and dialogue on emerging issues in artificial intelligence and international cooperation.
