A Roundtable Conference on the Situation on the Korean Peninsula was held at Lotte Hotel, Yangon on 15-16 July 2018. It was attended by all ten ASEAN-ISIS members, ASEAN Secretariat and officials from Korea MOFA, Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA), the Ambassador of Republic of Korea and officials, Myanmar-ISIS members, officers from MOFA (Naypyitaw). The event was organized under the auspices of ASEAN-ISIS of which Myanmar-ISIS is the Chair for 2018. The roundtable came at a very opportune time soon after the US-DPRK Summit. Perspectives and views of the ASEAN think tanks were very rich; how ASEAN could play a constructive role for peace and prosperity on the Peninsula after the fast momentum of positive events between North and South Korea and US and DPRK.
On 6 July 2018 Myanmar ISIS hosted two events: a talk in the morning by the Thai Ambassador H.E. Mr. Jukr Boon-Long, with a topic “A Growing Partnership: The 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of Thailand-Myanmar Diplomatic Relations in 2018” and in the afternoon a video show titled, “the DPRK-US Summit” by the DPRK Embassy in Yangon. Both events were attended by Chairman and Myanmar ISIS members, Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials, teachers and students of the IR Depts of the Universities in Yangon.
Talk on "IMF, US Dollar and Global Financial Crisis," by Dr. U Myint, held at the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (MISIS), today and it was attended by some Members of MISIS, scholars, teachers and students from IR Departments of the Universities in Yangon.
Talk on "The New Global Order- a view from Europe"" by Dr. Fraser Cameron, Director, EU-Asia Center, Brussels, took place at the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Myanmar-ISIS), which was attended by some Members of Myanmar-ISIS, Diplomats, Researchers, Teachers and Students from the Universities.
A briefing on ""The Current Situation in Rakhine", took place at the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies by Mr. Rick Heizman, Ethnomusicologist and a friend of Myanmar, which was attended by some Myanmar ISIS members, researchers and teachers and students from Universities in Yangon.
H.E. Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Yangon was invited as a guest at the monthly “Ambassador Talk” hosted by Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies - Myanmar-ISIS collaborated with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Myanmar Office. The talk was focusing on the German Foreign Policy. H.E. Janetzke-Wenzel was highlighting the important relationship between Germany and also discussed on EU and the ASEAN states for sustainable development in Myanmar.
H.E. Paul Seger, Ambassador of Switzerland, was invited for “Ambassador Talk” hosted by the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Myanmar-ISIS) collaborated with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Myanmar. After the talk, Ambassador H.E. Paul Seger engaged in a debate on whether and how the federal system of Switzerland can be a comparison or inspiration for Myanmar.
A group of RSIS researchers led by Ambassador Ong Keng Yong visited Myanmar ISIS on 15 September 2017 for an exchange of views on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and Maritime Security with the Chairman of Myanmar ISIS and members and others specially invited guests. They also discussed future cooperation between Myanmar ISIS and S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS).
A delegation from the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies(BIISS) visited Yangon at the invitation of Myanmar ISIS from 21 to 23 August 2017. It is a well- known Think Tank in Bangladesh affiliated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation was led by its Chairman Ambassador H.E.Mr. Munshi Faiz Ahmad and comprised the Director General Major General A K M Abdur Rahman and a senior research officer. Myanmar ISIS and BIISS signed MoU for cooperation between the two organizations on 22 August 2017 at Myanmar ISIS Conference Room. Later on they exchanged views with Myanmar ISIS Chairman and members for potential collaboration in future.
