Lecture on the topic “Asia Pacific to Indo-Pacific: What this US-Promoted Shift Means to ASEAN, Russia and Asia”

Today, another lecture was delivered by Dr. Victor Sumsky, Director, ASEAN Centre in MGIMO University, MOFA, Moscow on the topic “Asia Pacific to Indo-Pacific: What this US-Promoted Shift Means to ASEAN, Russia and Asia”. This is the second time that Dr. Victor Sumsky visited Myanmar ISIS, the first time was in 2016. This event was organized by the Ambassador of Russia to Myanmar Dr. Nikolay Listopadov. Myanmar ISIS Chairman, members and the Russian Ambassador together with interns attended the lecture. A lively round of discussions followed the talk. It was encouraging to see that many interns contributed to the discussion by way of raising important and relevant questions on the Indo-Pacific concept. Myanmar ISIS highly appreciates the younger generation for their keen interest to take part in the Q & A session.

Talk on “Federalism and the German Model of Federalism”

Myanmar ISIS hosted a talk by Mr. Raimund Grafe, Managing Director, Representative of the Free State of Thuringia for Federal Affairs, Berlin on “Federalism and the German Model of Federalism” at Myanmar ISIS conference room on 1 November 2018 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. This event was arranged by FES, Yangon. It was attended by MISIS Chairman, members as well as interns at MISIS. Mr. Grafe is Chief of Staff of the delegation of the Free State of Thuringia to the German Federation. He studied political science and economics at the University of Munich and Sciences Po in Paris.

Launching Ceremony of Myanmar Centre for Mekong Studies (MCMS)

Myanmar Centre for Mekong Studies was launched with ribbon cutting ceremony this morning at Myanmar ISIS building in the attendance of Chinese delegation from CIIS led by Dr.Rong Ying, Vice President of CIIS and Director of China Centre for Mekong Studies and Deputy Permanent Secretary of MOFA, U Aung Kyaw Zan. The six riparian states along the Mekong river already have established their National Centres. There will be a meeting of the National Centre for Mekong Studies of the six countries on October 30th at Siem Reap. They will discuss the future activities of the National Centres. Myanmar ISIS members Daw Than Than Htay and U Ba Hla Aye are assigned as Coordinator and Deputy Coordinator respectively of the Myanmar Centre. After the opening ceremony, a panel discussion on the “Environmental Protection in LMC Region” followed . Professor Dr. Daw Kyi Kyi Hla, member of Myanmar ISIS and Professor Dr. Daw Khin Ni Ni Thein, Secretary, Advisory Group of the National Water Resources Committee, and Advisor, Myanmar Centre for Mekong Studies (MCMS) and Ms. Lu Diyin, Lancang-Mekong Environmental Cooperation Center read papers on the topic. The LMC cooperation is one of the initiatives taken by China in connection with the BRI.

Researchers from Aceh visiting MISIS

Today, three scholars from Aceh, Indonesia paid a visit to Myanmar ISIS. They had a cordial exchange of views on how to promote connectivity between Aceh, Myanmar and India on sea and air routes. The group was led by TEUKU CUT MAHMUD AZIZ, lecturer of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, AlMuslim University, Aceh. From Myanmar side Myanmar ISIS Chairman, Ambassador U Wynn Lwin, U Kyee Myint, U Ba Hla Aye, Professor Daw Carole Ann Chit Tha and U Khin Maung Lynn took part in the discussion. Aceh and Myanmar are geographically close but the people are far away from each other because of lack of connectivity and contacts. The Indonesian scholars are here in Yangon to find out ways to strengthen relations between Aceh and Myanmar in particular and between Myanmar and Indonesia in general. They are conducting research on this project which is funded and supported by the MOFA of Indonesia.

29th Country Coordinators’ Meeting of Network of East Asian Think Tanks, in Yangon

29th meeting of NEAT CCM Co-chaired by NEAT Myanmar and NEAT China took place at Yangon Melia Hotel on 17 September 2018. The meeting discussed on NEAT China’s working group report titled "Mapping an EAEC Blueprint 2030: for an Open and Innovative East Asia", NEAT Korea’s "East Asian Socio-Cultural Connectivity", NEAT Japan’s "Enhancing the East Asian Food Security Mechanisms: APTERR's Contribution to Food security and Disaster Prevention", and NEAT Thailand’s "Mainstreaming Disability in East Asian Economic Community: Breaking Barriers and Creating Inclusive Society through Mutual Collaboration". Then, Memorandum for submission to the SOM was drafted and approved at the meeting.

Bilateral Talks on Korea-Myanmar Relations and Korea’s New Southern Policy

Chancellor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA), H.E. Mr. Cho Byung-jae and delegation visited MISIS and held bilateral discussions on Myanmar - Korea Relations and Korea’s New Southern Policy, on 29th August 2018 from 10:00 am to 12 noon.

U Ba Hla Aye, member of Myanmar ISIS, gives a talk entitled "Responsibility to Protect and Myanmar" at the Academic Talk 4/2018 of the Myanmar Academy of Arts and Science at the Yangon University on 8 August 2018.

U Ba Hla Aye talked about the post- Cold War Inter-State and Intra-State situations that prompted the then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to propose UN-authorized humanitarian intervention, the 2005 World Summit Outcome that agreed upon the Responsibility to Protect (RtoP) and the UN’s promotion of RtoP. He explained about the idea to establish a permanent criminal court after WWI and the eventual establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC). He talked about the ICC Prosecutor’s application for ICC jurisdiction over alleged “deportation” of Bengalis after the ARSA terrorist attacks in October 2016 and August 2017 in Rakhine and why Myanmar is not bound by the ICC Statute.

State Counsellor and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs visits Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Myanmar ISIS)

Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (Myanmar ISIS) is highly honoured and privileged to welcome H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs at the Institute on Wednesday morning, 18 July 2018. She was accompanied by Deputy Minister at the President’s Office H.E. U Min Thu and Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs H.E. U Myint Thu. All the members of Myanmar ISIS were present at the meeting. Chairman of Myanmar ISIS U Nyunt Maung Shein submitted a briefing on the Institute’s current activities and vision for the future. He explained that Myanmar ISIS this year serves as the Chair of ASEAN ISIS and Co-Chair of NEAT and the events that were held under its chairmanship of these two groups. Her Excellency commended Myanmar ISIS for the achievements it has made and gave guidance for the future work of Myanmar ISIS.
